Skin Cancer:
Unfortunately the rates of skin cancer have been rising steadily over the past several years. Many times skin cancer develops in the head or neck because this area is exposed to the sun over a lifetime more than any other area of our skin. There are many different types of skin cancer and they can first appear in different ways including a spot that is different in color or texture as compared to the surrounding skin. A "scab" that does not heal or go away can often turn out to be a skin cancer.
It is of course difficult to describe all of the ways that a skin cancer may present, so if you have a "spot" or "lesion" that is symptomatic or has persisted, it is best to have it examined by your primary care physician or dermatologist.
If your doctor is also suspicious, he or she may biopsy the lesion, or refer you to a dermatologist or facial plastic surgeon for further evaluation. In some cases a dermatologist will remove the skin cancer and then turn over the reconstruction of the area to a facial plastic surgeon. The number one goal is of course to remove the cancer in its entirety. The next step is to reconstruct the area in such as a manner to minimize distortion of any facial features. Dr. Dahiya is well versed in many techniques to best reconstruct any defect in the face and neck resulting from a skin cancer excision.
